Performance testing has its place it is important to ensure that your product performs to the expected level prior to release. 

For some companies however performance testing becomes merely performance recording as time runs out and the code is in no state to be changed for any kind of performance improvement. Consequently performance needs to be built in from the start with the test and development teams equipped to spot potential issues sooner.
